Everything You Want to Know About Jaald

Honest answers about our leather, our craft, and how we work.

Leather Quality
Yes — every Jaald product is made from genuine full-grain leather. This is the highest grade of leather, cut from the outermost layer of the hide with nothing removed or altered. It is stronger, more breathable, and longer-lasting than top-grain, bonded, or PU leather. We don’t use corrected or split-grain leather anywhere in our range.
Jaald uses vegetable-tanned leather — tanned using natural plant-based tannins over 30–60 days. The result is leather that is biodegradable, develops a rich patina over time, and ages more beautifully than chrome-tanned alternatives. It’s better for you, better for the craftsperson, and better for the planet.
New full-grain vegetable-tanned leather is naturally firmer than processed leather — that’s a sign of quality, not a flaw. Within 2–4 weeks of regular use, the leather softens and begins to conform to your body and carry habits. By the one-month mark, most customers notice a significant improvement in feel and flexibility.
Light surface marks are normal on full-grain leather, especially in the first few weeks. Most scratches on vegetable-tanned leather buff out simply by rubbing gently with your fingertip — the warmth and natural oils in your skin help the fibres settle back. Over time, these marks blend into the patina and add to the character of the piece.
Yes — one of the most special things about full-grain vegetable-tanned leather. Patina is the gradual deepening and enriching of colour as the leather absorbs natural oils from your hands and reacts to light and use. For a wallet used daily, you’ll notice real character forming within 3–6 months. For a bag, 6–12 months of regular use brings a visible transformation.
Not at all — natural marks, subtle colour variations, and minor grain irregularities are the fingerprint of genuine full-grain leather. They are proof your piece comes from a real hide. Every Jaald piece is unique. These characteristics do not affect durability and become less noticeable as the leather develops its patina.
Genuine full-grain leather does not peel — ever. Peeling is a sign of bonded leather or PU coating, which we never use. Cracking is entirely preventable with basic conditioning every 3–6 months. Full-grain leather is naturally water-resistant — light rain and splashes bead off and wipe clean. For heavy monsoon conditions, apply a leather protector spray. If the piece gets significantly wet, dry it naturally away from heat — never use a hairdryer.
Jaald uses buffalo and cowhide leather sourced from Indian tanneries. Our leather is a byproduct of the food industry — the animals are not raised for their hides. We use vegetable tanning, which produces far less chemical waste than chrome tanning, and we choose tanneries with responsible effluent treatment.
Durability & Construction
With basic care, a Jaald leather bag or wallet will last 15–25 years of daily use. Full-grain leather strengthens at seams over time, handles scratches and abrasion better than synthetic alternatives, and looks more distinguished with every passing year. Many of our customers use Jaald products as heirlooms.
Yes — every Jaald product is handcrafted by skilled artisans in India using saddle-stitch construction. Two needles and a single thread are passed alternately through each pre-punched hole. This is the most durable stitching method for leather goods — if the thread breaks at any point, the stitch holds on both sides and will not unravel. Stress points are double-stitched.
Jaald uses solid brass hardware — D-rings, buckles, and rivets. Brass does not rust and develops a warm patina over time that complements aged leather beautifully. Zippers are heavy-duty YKK or equivalent quality. We do not use plastic clips or chrome-plated zinc on any load-bearing hardware.
Jaald products are covered against manufacturing defects. If something fails due to a construction fault — stitching coming undone, hardware failure, structural issues — we will repair or replace it. Leather goods are also repairable: straps can be replaced, hardware re-set, and leather re-conditioned. Contact us at jaald.com/pages/contact.
Size, Fit & Laptop Compatibility
Most Jaald bags with a laptop compartment are designed to fit 13–15" laptops comfortably. Our larger backpacks — Horizon Hiker 18", Horizon Hiker 21", Eclipse Trekker — fit 15–16" devices. Check the individual product page for exact interior dimensions. If you have a 16" MacBook Pro with a case, verify the sleeve dimensions before ordering.
Start by measuring your laptop. Then think about what else you carry daily. Our slim backpacks (15–18L) suit commuters who travel light. Mid-range bags (20–25L) handle a laptop, documents, lunch, and daily extras. Larger backpacks and duffels (25L+) work well for heavy loads or short travel. Every product page lists interior dimensions and what fits inside.
Leather colour naturally varies between hides, and screen calibration affects how colours appear. Product photos are shot in natural light to be as accurate as possible, but the leather you receive may be slightly lighter, darker, or warmer in tone — this is the nature of natural materials, not a defect. Colour deepens as the leather develops its patina with use.
Care & Maintenance
Full-grain leather requires minimal care. Apply a thin coat of leather conditioner or beeswax balm every 3–6 months. Wipe clean with a barely damp cloth when needed. Stuff bags with tissue to retain shape when storing, and keep in a breathable dust bag away from direct sunlight. During monsoon season in India, place silica gel sachets inside stored items. Yes — Jaald leather has the rich, warm, organic scent of genuine vegetable-tanned leather. It is earthy and pleasant, not chemical. The smell is strongest when new and mellows over the first few weeks. It is entirely natural and safe. Leaving the item in a well-ventilated area for a few days will speed up the mellowing if preferred.
Personalization & Customization
Yes — Jaald offers hand embossing on most products. You can add initials (1–3 characters), a name, a date, or a short message. Embossing is done using heated brass stamps and is permanent. Select the personalisation option on the product page or visit jaald.com/pages/personalization.
Yes — Jaald offers bespoke customization. You can specify leather colour, hardware finish, dimensions, lining, and strap configuration. Our design team will sketch and confirm the design before production begins. Custom orders typically take 4–6 weeks. Visit jaald.com/pages/customization to start your request.
Personalized and custom-made items cannot be returned unless there is a manufacturing defect. We recommend double-checking names, initials, and spellings before submitting, as embossing is permanent. If we make an error, we will remake the item at no charge.
Shipping & Delivery
Yes — Jaald ships worldwide. Standard in-stock orders are dispatched within 1–2 business days. International delivery typically takes 7–14 business days depending on destination. Tracking is included with every order. Personalized orders require an additional 3–5 business days for production before dispatch.
Import duties depend on your country’s customs regulations. Jaald ships from India, and most countries apply import duties on goods above a certain value threshold. These charges are the responsibility of the recipient and are not included in the product price. Contact us at jaald.com/pages/contact with any shipping questions.
Gifting & Corporate Orders
Absolutely — Jaald products make exceptional gifts. They last decades, become more personal over time, and can be personalised with initials or a name. Every order comes in premium packaging. Gift wrapping and a personalised message card are available at checkout. Perfect for birthdays, Father’s Day, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and corporate occasions.
Yes — we can add your company logo, individual recipient names, or custom packaging for bulk orders. Lead times are typically 2–4 weeks depending on volume. Visit jaald.com/pages/corporate-gifting or contact us directly to discuss your requirements.
Product-Specific Questions
Most Jaald journals use a refillable insert system — when you finish the pages, you replace only the insert, not the leather cover. Paper is acid-free, typically 80–90gsm, and fountain pen friendly. Pages are available in lined, blank, and dotted grid styles depending on the model.
Jaald wallets are crafted from full-grain leather without a metallic RFID blocking layer — this keeps them slim and allows the leather to breathe and age naturally. Most models hold 4–8 cards plus cash. Card slots are snug enough that cards do not fall out. If RFID protection is a priority, an RFID sleeve insert works inside any Jaald wallet.
Our smaller duffels typically meet carry-on size requirements for most airlines — always check specific product dimensions against your airline’s policy before travelling. Our toiletry bags have a wipe-clean interior lining and go through security X-ray without issue. Keep your liquids (100ml containers) in a separate clear 1-litre pouch for security screening.
About Jaald
Yes — completely. Jaald uses genuine full-grain vegetable-tanned leather, the highest commercially available grade. The price reflects the material cost, the skilled hand labour, and the fact that you are buying something built to last 20+ years. When you calculate cost per year of use, a Jaald bag costs less than almost any cheaper alternative you’d replace multiple times over the same period.
Jaald is handcrafted in India, by Indian artisans, using full-grain vegetable-tanned leather — sold honestly under our own name. You get the same quality of leather and construction at a price that reflects the actual work involved, without paying a foreign brand markup. We also offer personalisation and full bespoke customization that most brands at our price point do not.
Yes on both counts. Our leather comes from hides that are byproducts of the food industry. We use vegetable tanning, which is biodegradable and produces far less toxic waste than chrome tanning. Our goods are made to last decades, not seasons — dramatically reducing environmental impact. Read more at jaald.com/pages/eco-efforts.
